History of the Quarter Tonner

The Quarter Tonner was invented by Warren Ackerman in 1978 and is one of the tube lures that draws marlin strikes with regularity. The name is credited to Captain Tioni Judd, who ran Warren's 31' Bertram, High Flyer, for many years.

Tube lures are designed to create a steady stream of smoke, punctuated by vertical rooster tails in rhythmic fashion. They sizzle then pop! But the Quarter Tonner is slightly different than the others.

The geometry of the length to diameter of this lure head also give it a hunting action when run on the face of the wave. It will jitter a bit from left to right as well as sizzling and popping. It appears to be searching back and forth as it runs.

The original QT's were cast in solid colors and had a sharp leading edge, which was easily chipped. The newer baits by Scott Crampton have a slightly beveled leading edge, which is more durable. While color is important to the fisherman, contrast and action seem to be more important to the marlin!
