Ali‘i Kai Lures are crafted by Kona Charter Captain Shawn Rotella, a veteran fisherman of over two decades. His journey into lure making began after encountering legends Joe Yee and Tom Futa while working at Hawaii Fiberglass in Oahu.
Intrigued by their frequent resin purchases, Shawn—already skilled in shaping surfboards and big game fishing—naturally transitioned into lure making. Tom Futa was the first to share the craft and introduced him to deeper knowledge in their joint workshop.
Before retiring, Futa passed down his molds and wooden masters to Shawn. Now running the charter boat Night Runner in Kona, Shawn has spent over a decade perfecting his lures. Today, Ali‘i Kai—which means “King of the Sea”—is available worldwide.
