This Aliʻi Kai Baby Skipjack is built around one of the most important offshore baitfish profiles in Hawaiʻi. Skipjack tuna, also called aku, are a natural food source for marlin, ahi, ono, and other pelagic predators. The blue-purple color, realistic hand-painted body, flashabou skirt, and lead-loaded construction give this lure the look and movement needed in a serious Kona-style trolling spread.
Aliʻi Kai Lures are handmade in Kona by charter captain Shawn Rotella, who has fished Hawaiian waters for over 20 years. While working on Oʻahu, he met Hawaiian lure legends Joe Yee and TomFuta, who soon became mentors. Tom welcomed him into his workshop and eventually passed down many original molds and hand-carved masters.
Shawn still uses those original Futa designs to craft many of his lures. Each one is shaped, poured, and tuned by hand, never factory made, and battle-tested on Shawn’s own charter, Night Runner.
Aliʻi Kai means “King of the Sea.” These lures are built to rule it.
