Lure Maker Bio
Chester Kaita crafted lures in the 1960s and 1970s on Oahu, including the legendary plunger used by Bobbie Brown to catch a 1,376-pound grander. Henry Chee, celebrated as the "inventor" of the resin tube, also landed his first grander using a custom scoop made by Kaita.
Kaita’s lures quickly gained popularity in Kona, becoming favorites among legendary fishermen like Chee, who found them exceptionally effective. His large scoop designs, ideal for slow trolling behind Japanese or Haole sampans, are now highly prized by collectors. Known for their distinctive features—such as shell slab inserts, salt-and-pepper designs, and crushed-shell “countertop” materials—Kaita's lures were initially unlabeled.
Later, he collaborated with the Izuo Brothers, producing lures under the labels "Izuo Bros," "Trolure," and occasionally for Pax Pacifica.
Today, Chester Kaita’s lures are highly sought after and remain treasured pieces in fishing collections, representing a golden era of Hawaiian big-game fishing.
