About the Lure Maker: Capt. Shawn Rotella and Ali‘i Kai Lures
Ali‘i Kai Lures are handcrafted by Kona charter captain Shawn Rotella, who has been fishing Hawaiian waters for over two decades. Shawn's journey into lure making began more than 22 years ago, when he crossed paths with legendary lure makers Joe Yee and the late Tom Futa while working at Hawaii Fiberglass on Oahu.
Curious about the two older gentlemen frequently purchasing gallons of resin, Shawn eventually discovered their craft. Already skilled in working with resin through surfboard making and his experience in big game fishing, Shawn found the transition to lure making to be a natural fit. Tom Futa initially shared his expertise, teaching Shawn the fundamentals, and soon after, Shawn received invitations to visit the workshops of both Futa and Yee.
Before retiring, Tom Futa sold many of his molds to Shawn, along with the original wooden shape masters used to create duplicates. Over the past 11 years, Shawn has been running his Kona charter boat, Night Runner, where he has tested and perfected his handmade lures. Now, for the first time, Ali‘i Kai Lures are available worldwide, bringing these expertly crafted baits to fishermen everywhere.
The name "Ali‘i Kai" translates to "King of the Sea," reflecting the lures' reputation and quality.
