Lure Maker Bio: 

Aliʻi Kai Lures are handmade in Kona by charter captain Shawn Rotella, who has fished Hawaiian waters for over 20 years. He got his start in lure making after meeting Hawaiian legends Joe Yee and Tom Futa while working in Oʻahu.

Already experienced with resin and offshore fishing, Shawn’s transition to lure making came naturally. Tom Futa was the first to offer guidance and later invited Shawn into his workshop, along with Joe Yee. Before retiring, Tom Futa sold him many original molds and the wooden masters used to shape them. Shawn still uses those original Futa designs to make many of his lures.

For the last 11 years, Shawn has been running his own Kona charter, Night Runner, testing and perfecting every lure he builds. These baits are not factory-made. They are shaped, poured, and tuned by a fisherman who uses them every day.
